Parenting: 10 Questions to Discover How Your Child Learns Best

EARLY SIGNS OF LEARNING STYLES

These questions are not definitive, only indicative. We all seem to have one sense that we prefer to learn new things. This favorite sense shows up early for most children. This favorite sense is the one that is most often used to learn new things. However, we use a second sense now and then to acquire new information so we are not one-dimensional. However, recognizing your child’s favorite sense whether seeing, hearing, or feeling will assist you in teaching him/her what you know about the world we live in.

FOR CHILDREN 2 YEARS AND OLDER

1. If there is music to be heard, does your child pay more attention to this than to anything else?

2. Does your child really enjoy coloring with crayons?

3. When traveling by car, does your child spend most of his/her time looking at things (scenery, cars, you, objects)?

4. Is your child a cuddle-er? I.e. Really loves being touched, sitting in your lap, carried in your arms?

5. Does your child really enjoy stacking blocks, moving pieces of wood, pushing silent cars around, playing in mud?

6. Does s/he hum or sing along when the right music is playing?

7. Does your child like to draw stick figures, or make marks with pen or pencils (on the wall, on the floor, on paper, on anything s/he can)?

8. Does your child like to stroke a cat, soft fabric, your cheek?

9. Is your child very sensitive to heat and cold and cries when frustrated?

10. Does your child respond to music by drumming, waving his/her arms, dancing., or wiggling to the beat of the music?
